The Art of Admissions

Published August 2024

Admissions is an art, not a science!

I have been fascinated by the admissions process since I was a high schooler applying to colleges. I remember coming across my older sibling’s application essay to MIT, which was only one short paragraph instead of the maximum length. It was the one college that had rejected my sibling’s application; every other school on the list had resulted in an acceptance. My sibling was an outstanding student with top grades, scores and awards, but I wondered if it was the brief essay that had resulted in this decision.

Unlike most other countries, to be admitted to a college or graduate program in the United States, there are factors considered that are beyond metrics such as grades and test scores – such as personality, likability, and character. Applicants are judged by a reader or committee and need to appeal to their emotions.

What I love about admissions consulting is helping people tell their stories and paint a picture of their lives. Admissions is very subjective and like art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For instance, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci is viewed as one of the best paintings from the Renaissance period, and even of all time. It is widely seen as beautiful, but not everyone agrees; some find it underwhelming and are surprised by the diminutive size of the artwork. In the same manner, in crafting your application, you must be true to yourself and your goals while paying attention to the small details to make an original work of art.

I enjoy the strategy of creating the story which perfectly captures your past and future ambitions while highlighting what makes you special. Our goal is to present your candidacy in the most flattering way possible and have others believe in your future potential!
